The Museum of Madison County History has a fascinating collection of historic panoramic images.
Panoramic, black and white, photos were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As tall as 7, 8, or 9 inches and as long as 28, 33, and even 50 inches, these functioned very well for group shots: family reunions, church congregations, school classes, factory workers, fraternal organizations, clubs, and military units, etc. The Museum of Madison County History has a fascinating collection of these. Our most popular is the panoramic photo of the 1913 Harley-Davidson Cycle Club on 2nd Avenue in Anderson. The 74 “Harleys” of the period are lined up with the male riders in slacks, shirts, ties, and flat caps. This unique picture has garnered for the museum sizable financial donations from visitors wishing to purchase a copy.
